Coal Miners Daughter Cocktail

A Late Summer☀️Early 🍁Autumn 🥃Sipper

I just came across this recipe for a Coal Miners Daughter Cocktail and I couldn’t resist.  So many reasons it caught my attention!  1)  Bourbon, duh!  2) I just returned from Nashville and I’m super nostalgic for country classics, including Ms. Loretta Lynn;  3) Lemon, honey and Lavender!  4) Bourbon (did I say Bourbon already?)

This Coal Miners Daughter Cocktail sounded so good, I had to try it.  There’s a bonus too, I have almost everything growing right in my yard……..except for the bourbon.  I wish I had a 🌳 bourbon tree.

Loretta Lynn, Coal Miners Daughter!

Loretta Lynn, from Butcher Holler in Kentucky sang about her life in her huge hit,  “Coal Miners Daughter”.  Do you remember?  Why not mix a “Coal Miners Daughter Cocktail” and listen again.

Here’s Loretta Lynn getting a lifetime achievement award in 2014 in the revamped, original Ryman Auditorium, then singing Coal Miners Daughter.  Enjoy!

There’s also a movie about her life.  Loretta Lynn is played by Sissy Spacek who won an Oscar for best actress in the 1980 movie.  It also starred Tommy Lee Jones.  I think I’m going to watch it again….it’s been a long time.

Back To The Cocktailing!

This gorgeous shot was taken by my sister, Laura.

The credit for this cocktail goes to Bartender Derrick Bass from the Willie Jane in Venice, CA.  Derrick Bass is known for his garden-to-glass-cocktails.  Here’s how he makes it!

Make sure you’ve got a large ice cube!  I have a great and inexpensive mold for the larger than normal cubes.  They’re actually an important component as they will melt slower and keep your drink from getting too watered down.  You can order a few from Amazon and have them by tomorrow!

Macerated Ginger

The recipe I found was for a massive amount of the stuff.  My version is a  modified way to make a small batch, enough for a fun evening of cocktails!

Peel 2 inches of fresh ginger, then boil for about 20 minutes in about 3 cups of water.  Remove from the pot, then mince as finely as possible, or use a rasp.  Mix the ginger with 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice.  Store in a small jar, covered and refrigerate until ready to mix your drinks.

Into a cocktail shaker, add 1 teaspoon of the Macerated Ginger, 3/4 ounces fresh lemon juice, 3/4 ounces honey and 1 1/2 ounces bourbon.  Do a dry shake (no ice) for about 20 seconds, then strain into a rocks glass.  Add one large square ice cube, strain the cocktail over the ice cube, into the glass.  Garnish with a fresh sprig of lavender.  To help the lavender release it’s flavor and aroma, give it a slap against the counter before adding it to the glass.   Cheers!
